A 64-year-old tub of American lard has been deemed fit for human consumption by food safety authorities in the eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Millions of tins of “Swift’s Bland Lard” – a pig fat which was used as a spread similar to butter or as a cooking fat – were distributed by US soldiers to West Germans after World War II in care packages that included other essentials like powdered milk, cheese and sugar.

Some of those made their way to communist East Germany, including one to Hans Feldmeier, a pharmacist from the Baltic Sea town of Warnemünde who never opened the can.

Worried that the lard had passed its expiration date, the 87-year-old recently decided to turn it over to the state for a comprehensive inspection.

The response was surprisingly positive.

“Overall, the product has a degree of freshness and material composition necessary to be assessed to be satisfactory after 64 years,” according to the State Office for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Security.

The authorities did, however, find minor deficiencies in the lard’s smell and taste, discovering that it was slightly gritty and appeared old, meaning it could not compete with the quality of a fresh sample. Still, it appeared to be fit for human consumption, they said.

The office credited the air-tight US can and preservatives for maintaining the lard in such pristine condition over the years.

Feldmeier promptly asked for his tin of lard back, calling it “beautiful” and saying he couldn’t imagine parting with it.

So the authorities sent it back to him – empty.

It’s a seemingly absurd idea on the surface: Why would democrats and liberals want to vote for Ron Paul (a Republican) over President Obama? Remember when Obamapromisedhe would decriminalize marijuana, but now his own administration continues to raid legal drug dispensaries in California? That’s a classic Obama lie: Say one thing to get elected, then turn around and do the exact opposite.

Ron Paul, on the other hand, openly supports decriminalizing marijuana and ending the failed War on Drugs. Under Ron Paul, the FDA would be forced to end its vicious armed raids on Amish farmers and raw dairy producers. Obama has openly allowed such armed raids to continue under his watch, refusing to even take a stand for food freedom in America.

Ron Paul understands thatliberty is the most important component of abundance. Obama is just a corporate puppet, of course, and that means he does whatever the powerful corporations tell him to do — especially the Wall Street and Big Pharma corporations. So it’s no surprise he hasn’t taken a stand to support health freedom for foods and supplements.

#4) Ron Paul would shut down secret military prisons like Gitmo, but Obama wants to expand those prisons and fill them with Americans!

It is now common knowledge that Obama lied when he said he would shut down Guantanamo Bay. As it turns out, Obama actually signed the NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) on New Year’s Eve (when no one would notice). The NDAA grants the U.S. government the claimed “legal” right to “indefinitely detain” U.S. citizens, throw them in secret military prisons, interrogate them and even kill them withno due process. Obama quietly signed this bill on New Year’s Eve, hoping no one would notice. This is how low his morals have stooped, by the way — to signing traitorous bills in the dark of night, on the evening before a major holiday where half the nation is hung over from alcohol. Why no signing ceremony with full coverage by CNN, huh? Maybe it’s because nationaltraitorsdon’t want their crimes against the United States Constitution to be filmed on camera.

In signing this, Obama violated his own oath of office, nullified the U.S. Bill of Rights, and essentially committed an act of mass civil rights violations against the People of America. Rep. Ron Paul, on the other hand, is one of the very few people who has openly and sternly opposed this unlawful NDAA which blatantly and arrogantly violates the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights.

This single point alone outweighs everything else you might think about Ron Paul. Even if you disagree with Ron Paul on other issues, none of that really matters if you’re rotting away in a secret military prison for daring to protest in a public park, for example.Without the Bill of Rights, nothing else really mattersbecause tyranny takes over. The Bill of Rights must be defended first and at all costs. It is the only thing limiting the power of government and protecting the People from tyranny. Without it, we are all little more than slaves to a military dictatorship.

#5) Ron Paul is anti-war, Obama is pro-war.

Remember when Bush was the President, and everybody on the left was screaming about getting us out of all those wars in the Middle East? Funny how they suddenly fell silent when Obama took over the reins from Bush and continued running those same wars, isn’t it?

Ron Paul is solidly anti-war. Although he agrees with the need to “defend our shores,” he also believes that the United States has no moral authority (nor financial stability) from which to engage in running around the world as some sort of global police force, intervening in the business of nations,especially in the Middle East.

He is solidly against a war with Iran even as all the other candidates seem to be almost desperate to throwother people’s sons and daughtersonto the front lines of violent conflict. Only Ron Paul truly honors the troops bybringing them home. #7) Ron Paul does not need a teleprompter to tell you what he believes, and his message has remained consistent for over 25 years

Obama needs a teleprompter to figure out what to say. That’s because he’s mainly a puppet who says what he’s told to say and signs what he’s told to sign (like the NDAA, which he of course promised he wouldn’t sign but did anyway).

Ron Paul needs no teleprompter. He doesn’t have to keep track of which lies he told in which speech to which group. That’s because Ron Paul tells the truth every time, and his message is the same whether he’s in Iowa, New Hampshire or Texas.

Ron Paul isn’t sexy, trendy or hip. Instead, he’s honest, reliable and ethical. Gee, those might be good qualities for leaders to possess, ya think?

This should come as quite a relief to the Democrats out there. Ron Paul is really aLibertarianwho is running on the Republican ticket thanks to the necessary mechanisms of our two-party system. A man used a frozen armadillo to attack a 57-year old Pleasant Grove woman, Dallas police said.

The incident happened on Sept. 29 in an apartment complex parking lot.

According to investigators, the altercation occurred when the suspect was selling the carcass to the victim, who planned to eat the animal.

The pair apparently began arguing over the price of the item when the man twice threw the armadillo at the woman.

The animal first struck the woman in the leg and then in her chest.

She was reportedly bruised by the attack.

Detectives have been unable to find the man, who could face assault charges.

Morton Ellis, 69, said he fell asleep after parking his wheelchair on the porch of a vacant Hooters to escape the rain.
He said the woman, 22-year-old Josephine Rebecca Smith, told him she was a vampire as she bit off chunks of his face and part of his lip.

Ellis managed to fend her off and called police. Officers found Smith at the restaurant, half naked and covered in blood.

During her visit to South Africa, First Lady Michelle Obama stopped by the University of Cape Town for an event with young people.  She told the audience how she came from modest circumstances and was able to attend top schools and build a career at a big law firm, saying they too can achieve their dreams if they try hard enough.  After her speech, she was asked a series of soft questions like, “What advice can you give the youth today?”  But at the end of the session, one young person in the audience asked Mrs. Obama, who has devoted much of her time in the White House to promoting nutrition and healthy eating, what her favorite foods are.

“My favorite?” Obama said.  “Oh, this is a tough one.  “It is tough, you know, because if I say something not healthy, people will be, like, you aren’t really committed to health.  If I say something healthy, you know — I do — honestly, I like all kinds of foods.”

Obama mentioned Indian food, and then Mexican food, and then said: “No, if I picked one favorite, favorite food, it’s French fries.”  The audience began to laugh.  “Okay?  It’s French fries,” Obama continued.  “I can’t stop eating them.”  As the students laughed more, the First Lady quickly returned to her role as advocate of health eating.  “But eat your vegetables,” she said, to still more laughs.  “And exercise.”

Russian Interior Ministry troops were fed dog food earlier this year to save money, a former officer in the ministry said on Thursday.

A rare whistleblower in Russia’s expansive security forces, ex-Major Igor Matveyev said officers tried to cover up the scandal and other alleged wrongdoing at the Interior Ministry troops base where he served in the far east city of Vladivostok.

Matveyev, who served in Russia’s wars against Chechen separatists in the 1990s, said he was ordered dismissed after posting a video on the Internet this month alleging widespread corruption in the Interior Ministry forces.

No one at the ministry’s troop unit was immediately available to comment on his allegations.

“It’s embarrassing to say but soldiers here were fed dog food. It was fed to them as stew,” Matveyev said in an interview with Reuters, adding that dog food labels were covered up with labels reading ‘premium quality beef’.

The would-be victim from Switzerland answered an internet advert from the 43-year-old man seeking someone who would agree to be killed, cooked and eaten.

He claims he thought the offer — posted by a man in Slovakia — was nothing more than a “macabre fantasy game”.

But he said after speaking to the unnamed man on the phone, he realised he was “deadly serious”.

He alerted Swiss police who informed their Slovakian counterparts on Monday.

The cops sent in an undercover officer posing as the victim in a sting operation to catch the suspected flesh-eater.

But as officers attempted to arrest the man yesterday, in the north-eastern village of Kysak, a gunfight broke out and the man and a cop were shot.

A Kysak police spokesman said: “It appears this man was genuinely seeking to eat someone.

“His advert said he wanted someone who would agree to be put to sleep then killed, cut up, cooked and eaten.

“One of our officers and the suspect both suffered gunshot wounds during the arrest and are both being treated in hospital.”

City council wants to make Cleveland a healthier place to live and work. Monday night, council approved legislation that will affect how you eat and breathe.

“We are going to surpass other cities. We not only have better institutions, we have better people,” said councilman Joe Cimperman.

Cimperman is sponsoring an initiative called “Healthy Cleveland.” Part of his plan includes an outdoor smoking ban.

During Monday’s meeting, council voted to approve a smoking ban on city-owned properties, including public parks, pools and picnic areas. “You won’t be able to smoke in front of City Hall anymore. You won’t be able to smoke at a playground,” said Cimperman.

Smokers will be prohibited within 150 feet of a city-owned place of employment. City golf courses, cemeteries and lakefront fishing piers will be exempt from the ban. The smoking ban will take effect 60 days after the Mayor signs the legislation.

“A lot of this is going to be based on trust,” said Cimperman.

Cleveland restaurants will now have to revise their recipes. By July of 2013, trans fats will be banned from prepared food in city restaurants. “You look at KFC, Applebee’s, Wal-Mart, they’re already getting rid of it,” said Cimperman.

Anyone who violates either ordinance will get a warning. Second-time violaters will have to pay a $150 fine and subsquent violators will pay a $250 fine.

After months of haggling, food trucks owners score a victory. Council also voted to allow mobile food vendors to set up shop in the central business district.

“We recognize the legislation is going to be tweaked in November but we got to give it a shot because we have so many people who are entrepenuers, small business people. We can’t discriminate because one group of people say they don’t want them here,” said Cimperman.

A public school in Chicago has put in place a new policy that increases the role the State plays in the lives of young Americans. The Chicago Tribune reports the school no longer allows kids to pack their own lunches without a documented medical excuse. The reason? To save children from the irresponsible dietary decisions of their parents. Meanwhile, in Florida, State Legislatures are said to be close to passing a law that would ban saggy pants. Perhaps “E Pluribus Unum” should be replaced with “Tutto nello Stato, niente al di fuori dello Stato.”

Elsa Carmona, the principal at Little Village Academy and person responsible for the lunch ban, claims she is only looking to do what is best for her students. “Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school. It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom).” It seems the kids may have a different opinion on the quality of the school provided lunches. The Tribune reports that, “During a recent visit to the school, dozens of students took the lunch but threw most of it in the garbage uneaten. Though CPS has improved the nutritional quality of its meals this year, it also has seen a drop-off in meal participation among students, many of whom say the food tastes bad.”

As typical with heavy-handed government policy, an arbitrary regulation leads to tragic unforeseen consequences. Kids who don’t like the school’s signature slop are reduced to going hungry or risk any disciplinary measures that are included with the new policy.

Though many would argue that the freedom to eat what you would like is more important than defending the ability to sag, the likely to be implemented Florida law does more than simply require violators to pull up their pants. A student caught out of code could face in-school-suspension, an indication that legislatures place a higher value on students confirming to arbitrary law than actual intellectual enlightenment. Even this punishment doesn’t go far enough for State Senator Gary Siplin, who proposed a bill in 2005 that would have made the possession of sagging pants a second-degree misdemeanor. Possible punishment? Up to $50 in fines and ten days in jail. A choice of fashion leading to incarceration – the State at work.

This is the progressive ideal in action, force individuals into the institutions of government (public schools) and then use those services to regulate their actions. Students will eat what the State wants them to eat. Students will dress how the State wants them to dress. Students will learn what the State wants them to learn. And all for the good of those students! “It makes a lot of sense to me. A lot of kids will be able to do a lot more with two hands,” says one government advocate for the pants law.

These incidents are not without some beneficial results.  As is so often the case, totalitarian rule sparks open rebellion.  In Chicago we are treated with the wonderful sight of students discovering the righteous cause of liberty. I give you Fernando Dominguez, a new personal hero of mine. The seventh-grader and new freedom fighter is fighting the dietary oppression. “Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?” asks our young rebel in both English and Spanish. The question is followed by the chants of his supporters, “We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!” I can’t help but smile at the image.

Another student articulates the logic of liberalism. Says Yesenia Gutierrez, “They’re afraid that we’ll all bring in greasy food instead of healthy food and it won’t be as good as what they give us at school. It’s really lame. If we could bring in our own lunches, everyone knows what they’d bring. For example, the vegetarians could bring in their own veggie food.”

Government once again proves to be the best advocate for its opposition by overstepping any rational boundary. Students have been joined by their parents in criticizing the ban on outside lunches. Said one parent, “Some of the kids don’t like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast. So it would be a good idea if they could bring their lunch so they could at least eat something.”

And asked what they would prefer for lunch, the students demonstrate the unique preferences of individuals. Seventh Grader Ashley Valdez wants Subway. Second-grader Gerardo Ramos says he would “bring a banana, orange and some grapes.”Fourth-grader Eric Sanchez? “I would bring a juice and like a sandwich.” And perhaps the most honest of the bunch, second-grader Julian Ruiz responded, “Sometimes I would bring the healthy stuff, but sometimes I would bring Lunchables.”

I have often been critical of the quality of education in public schools; inadvertently, the actions of overreaching government officials may give these affected students an important lesson – the value of individual freedom.
