George Zimmerman to Be Charged in Trayvon Martin ShootingComments Off

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey plans to announce as early as Wednesday afternoon that she is charging neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, according to a law enforcement official close to the investigation.

It was not immediately clear what charge Zimmerman will face.

Martin, 17 and unarmed, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Police in Sanford, Fla., where the shooting took place, did not charge Zimmerman, citing the state’s “stand your ground” law.

Corey told reporters Tuesday night that she would hold a news conference about the case within 72 hours. A news release from her office said the event will be held in Sanford or Jacksonville, Fla.

Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Martin family, said this week that Corey’s office had asked where Trayvon’s parents would be each day this week. They arrived Wednesday in Washington for a civil rights conference organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton, where they spoke to reporters.

Sabryna Fulton and Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s parents, said they would not comment on the charges because they had not been personally notified. They scheduled a press conference for 5 :15 p.m.

Earlier reports that Zimmerman’s lawyers said they did not know where he was did not bother Trayvon’s parents, they said.

“We do have faith in the justice system. When it is time to arrest him, they will find him,” Fulton said.

The announcement of a charge against Zimmerman would come a day after Zimmerman’s attorneys withdrew from the case, citing their inability to contact Zimmerman.

Lawyers Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig on Tuesday expressed concern about Zimmerman’s emotional and physical well-being, saying he has taken actions without consulting them. They also said they do not know where Zimmerman is.

“You can stop looking in Florida,” Uhrig told reporters. “Look much further away than that.”

Corey said Monday that she would not bring the case before a grand jury, which was expected to convene this week. She said her decision to forgo the grand jury should not be viewed as an indication of whether charges will be filed.

Corey has indicated in recent weeks that she might not need a grand jury to bring charges against Zimmerman.

The lawyers said they stand by their assertions that Zimmerman acted in self-defense when he killed the 17-year-old, who was unarmed, but they acknowledged that they formed their impressions without meeting Zimmerman.

Grand Jury Will Not Hear Trayvon Martin CaseComments Off

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey decided Monday to not use a Grand Jury in the Trayvon Martin shooting death.

The grand jury was expected to release their report on Tuesday as to whether Zimmerman should be charged in the Feb. 26th shooting. The case is now in the hands of special prosecutor Angela Corey.

Ms. Corey said from the beginning that she may not need a grand jury.

According tot he state attorney’s office, the decision “should not be considered a factor in the final determination of the case.”

Shooting in the Dark: Three things people don’t know about the Trayvon Martin case (but think they do)Comments Off

People who are convinced that George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin for no good reason frequentlysay it’s absurd to suggest that an unarmed 17-year-old could have posed a deadly threat to a 28-year-old man who outweighed him by 100 pounds. According to astory in Monday’s New York Times, however, Zimmerman is only 20 pounds heavier than Martin, who was four inches taller.

The revised numbers by no means show that Zimmerman, a Sanford, Florida, neighborhood watch volunteer, is telling the truth when he says he shot Martin in self-defense on the night of February 26. But given that such basic facts are still a matter of dispute, we should be especially cautious about rushing to judgment on bigger questions like these:

Who started the fight?

It seems clear that Martin would still be alive if Zimmerman had not taken it upon himself to follow a teenager he deemed “real suspicious” in light of recent burglaries attributed to young black men. But Zimmerman claims he was heading back to his SUV when Martin approached him and, after a brief exchange, punched him in the face hard enough to knock him down. Although Martin was understandably nervous (and possibly angry) about being followed, that by itself would not justify the assault Zimmerman describes. But if Zimmerman did more than tail Martin—if he shoved him or displayed his gun, say—he might qualify as the initial aggressor.

Did Zimmerman shoot Martin “in cold blood”?

Enhanced Video of Zimmerman in Police Station Appears to Show InjuriesComments Off

Enhanced video of George Zimmerman being led into a Florida police station appears to show possible injuries to the back of his head, lending credence to his claim he was in a struggle with Trayvon Martin when he shot the teen.

ABC News initially released video of Zimmerman that did not clearly show marks on his scalp, but had the video enhanced digitally and released a new clip on Monday. That clip appears to show a gash. Zimmerman’s father claims his son was being beaten by the 17-year-old teen when he shot Martin in self-defense. Martin’s supporters say Zimmerman shot the unarmed teen on Feb. 26 after racially profiling him and stalking the youth through his neighborhood.

Twitter: Spamming Celebrities Not OK, Advocating Murder is Fine(1)

Social networking giant maintains ‘Kill Zimmerman’ page despite massive condemnation.

Twitter has refused to delete a profile page advocating the violent murder of George Zimmerman, the man who shot Trayvon Martin, even after a massive media backlash and despite the social network’s regular practice of deleting accounts for the comparatively minor offense of spamming celebrities or discussing certain political issues.

The profile page features an image of Zimmerman in crosshairs and includes tweets such as “Fuck the government. & #KILLZIMMERMAN,” “Rt if you think Zimmerman should Be Shot Instead Of Goon To Jail #KILLZIMMERMAN,” “Since I don’t have a date or escort I’m thinking about running away and killing Zimmerman,” “we should just all get up and #killzimmerman ourselves; fuck the system,” and “I ain’t no hater but I hate that cracka.”

One of the Tweets also expresses support for the fact that Obama has publicly involved himself in the Trayvon Martin controversy.

The page has been active for around a week and despite widespread media attention, Twitter has refused to remove the profile.

Is Twitter taking a political stance amidst one of the most racially charged public debates America has ever seen by keeping the ‘Kill Zimmerman’ page active? A brief summary of pages that weredeleted by the company in the recent past suggests the answer is yes.

Blogger David Seaman had his Twitter account temporarily suspended after sending out numerous tweets trying to get celebrities with large numbers of followers to draw attention to issues such as the NDAA and Occupy Wall Street. The fact that Seaman was sending so many messages to celebrities was characterized as spamming by Twitter.

Apparently, according to Twitter spamming celebrities is not OK, but advocating murder is perfectly acceptable.

The Plot Thickens: Video Shows No Blood or Bruises on George ZimmermanComments Off

A police surveillance video taken the night that Trayvon Martin was shot dead shows no blood or bruises on George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who says he shot Martin after he was punched in the nose, knocked down and had his head slammed into the ground.

The surveillance video, which was obtained exclusively by ABC News, shows Zimmerman arriving in a police cruiser. As he exits the car, his hands are cuffed behind his back. Zimmerman is frisked and then led down a series of hallways, still cuffed.

Zimmerman, 28, is wearing a red and black fleece and his face and head are cleanly shaven. He appears well built, hardly the portly young man depicted in a 2005 mug shot that until a two days ago was the single image the media had of Zimmerman.

Police Video Surveillance of George Zimmerman

The initial police report noted that Zimmerman was bleeding from the back of the head and nose, and after medical attention it was decided that he was in good enough condition to travel in a police cruiser to the Sanford, Fla., police station for questioning.

His lawyer later insisted that Zimmerman’s nose had been broken in his scuffle with 17-year-old Martin.

Spike Lee Won’t Apologize for Careless Tweet that Terrorized Elderly Couple (UPDATED!)(4)

Late last week, Spike Lee re-tweeted the address of ‘George Zimmerman’ to his quarter of a million followers.

Except it was the wrong address. It was the address of an elderly Florida couple whose son… William George Zimmerman (no relation to shooter) – lived briefly there in 1995. Now the 70-year-old school cafeteria lunch lady with a heart condition and her 72-year-old husband have been forced to move out of danger into a hotel temporarily after receiving hate mail, threats, harassing visits from reporters and fearful inquiries from neighbors.

The woman’s other son Chip Humble told the Orlando Sentinel, “It’s scary because there are people who aren’t mentally right and will take this information and run with it. To endanger people who are innocent because people are angry is not the answer. That’s not how we’re going to heal. It’s not [going] to help the Martin family for someone else to be hurt.”

The O’Reilly Factor contacted Spike Lee’s production company “40 Acres and a Mule.”  Instead of issuing a statement or an apology, the executive office told Factor producer Jesse Watters that Spike Lee had “no comment.” That’s it. The famous filmmaker is coming under heavy pressure on Twitter to apologize. Lee’s tweet has been removed, but it continues to be retweeted. Developing…

UPDATE: Spike has since apologized but the media is reporting that his Tweet could potentially lead to a lawsuit.

Paul-Haters Plan KKK Stunt To Smear CongressmanComments Off

Facebook activists discussed dressing up in Klan outfits as part of dirty tricks campaign to characterize Paul supporters as racist.

A group of Ron Paul-hating Facebook activists were caught planning a smear attack on the presidential candidate, after they openly discussed dressing up as Ku Klux Klan members and appearing at Ron Paul campaign events in South Carolina in an attempt to frame Paul’s supporters as racists.

Members of the ‘Stop Ron Paul 2012′ Facebook group posted a thread announcing a plan to stage a false flag against the Paul campaign by dressing up in racist garb and pretending they were Paul voters.

“If you live in South Carolina and want to have some real fun with these Paulbots here is what we do- go online and buy or make your very own KKK robe, complete with hood (hood is important),” stated the post. “Then get some Ron Paul signs off the internet or make your own. Follow Paul around South Carolina and be sure to get photographed by the media. Again, hoods are important. All can be Klansmen for Paul. Black, white, Jewish, Asian- those Paulbots will shit a brick!”

Although the thread was hastily deleted, a screenshots can be viewed below.

Other members of the group liked the idea, with one commenting, “That is seriously a great idea! Anyone wanna volunteer???,” as another asked where they could acquire KKK robes.

When one member objected to the idea, another responded, “Why not show the world the truth about the type on ilk that supporters Ron Paul?” – a bizarre exercise in circular logic given the fact that the Paul haters planning to stage the hoax wouldn’t need to dress up as racists if there were genuine Klan members who attended Paul’s campaign stops.

Indeed, polls show Ron Paul is the most popular Republican amongst non-whites, debunking the myth that his campaign panders to racists.

The man who started the thread urging fellow Paul-haters to post as Klan members, Jere Brower, has a history of defamation-ridden anti-Paul posts, claiming the Congressman wants to “legalize child prostitution” and is “against children going to school”. He has characterized Ron Paul supporters as “clinically insane,” while also trolling singer Kelly Clarkson’s Facebook page after she Tweeted her support for Paul last month.

According to Brower’s LinkedIn page, he works for Google as a “Field Operations Specialist,” specializing in “Crisis management, social media, media relations, brand specialist, event planning, event management”. A former US Army Specialist (SPC), Brower is also a Herman Cain supporter.

Browser now appears to have deleted his Facebook profile.

Another advocate of the smear, Chris Collins, lists his former employer as HermanCain.com. Collins, who called the KKK plan a “seriously great idea,” also lists his activities as “Jackson County GOP”, “Tea Party Movement”, “Freemasonry”, and “Jefferson Georgia Tea Party Patriots”.

This is the second time within the space of a week that Ron Paul has been targeted for underhanded dirty tricks.

Last week we reported on how the media seized upon an anonymous You Tube video, purported to have been made by a Paul supporter, which offensively questioned Jon Huntsman’s patriotism because he has adopted Chinese and Indian daughters.

The clip, which was cited to imply that Paul supporters were racist, was later analyzed by an independent company who discovered that the video “likely….came from a source within or closely tied to the Huntsman Campaign.”

Rand Paul was also the target of a similar smear during his run for Kentucky Senator, when Obama campaign volunteer and long term Democratic operative Tyler Collins, a supporter of Paul’s opponent Jack Conway, tried to portray Paul’s supporters as racists by dressing up in a tin-foil hat and adopting a slack-jawed accent while carrying racist signs opposing illegal immigration. The Louisville Courier Journal even used footage of the man, portraying him as a legitimate Rand Paul supporter, in a video report about the event.

It remains to be seen whether Ron Paul haters will go to such extreme lengths to deceptively smear the Congressman, but given the establishment media’s zeal to characterize Paul as a racist, don’t be surprised to see Brower and his cohorts on CNN or Fox News at some point this week.

Huntsman Supporters Admit Creating ‘Racist’ Video to Smear Ron Paul?Comments Off

A Jon Huntsman forum appears to show Huntsman supporters bragging about how they created a racist anti-Huntsman ad that the media instantly attributed to Ron Paul supporters in order to smear Paul and his voters as extremists.

However, the forum thread could just as easily be a satire, created by Ron Paul supporters, Huntsman voters, or someone with no interest in either candidate.

The lesson to take away from it all is not to believe that one anonymous Internet post represents any one candidate or campaign, which is just what the establishment media did when they instantly seized upon the suspicious anti-Huntsman ad to smear Ron Paul voters and by extension Ron Paul himself as racist.

The forum thread, entitled, ‘The paulbots are going crazy with our video’, states, “I cant believe how stupid these people are. As campaign insiders many of you are aware we created the fake video herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZeVqj-t1U0 and made it look like it came from the ron paul people. This is a suprise it went viral. And the good news is paul is getting blamed for it.”

“My goodness this is turning out better than expected. I was on the phone today with the campaign and they have another one coming out monday.”

The moderator of the website expresses confusion about whether or not the post is legitimate, writing, “We’re still confused about the whole thing….We feel the the bottom line is..anyone can post a video to youtube claiming to represent a group, just like someone can post here claiming to represent a group.”

The forum thread shows other apparent Huntsman supporters bragging about how the media fell for the fake video and blamed Ron Paul supporters, before others demand that the thread either be removed or hidden.

Whether or not the thread is the work of Huntsman supporters, the fact remains that an independent web consulting firm which analyzed the anti-Huntsman ad on behalf of the Paul campaign concluded that it most likely was created by the Huntsman campaign itself.

“In an analysis commissioned by Ron Paul’s presidential campaign, the web consulting firm CanDo.com presents a different hypothesis: that supporters of Huntsman’s campaign posted the video in an attempt to trigger a backlash against Paul,” reports Politico.

The firm found that one of the first URL referrals to the video came from Jon2012.com, Huntsman’s campaign website, and that this likely originated from an internal Huntsman campaign email since the website itself contains no link to the video.

“After researching the available evidence, we believe it is likely that the video came from a source within or closely tied to the Huntsman Campaign,” concludes the CanDo.com analysis.

The analysis also found that the You Tube and Twitter accounts responsible for creating the video, NHLiberty4Paul, were created on the day the video was released, and no reference to the handle existed beforehand.

Immediately before the video received media attention, Huntsman told CNN, “Tell Dr. Paul that I owe him a tweet in return and he should be expecting one sometime soon.”

Whereas the establishment media treated the original claim that Ron Paul supporters were responsible for the offensive ad with a blaze of publicity, the far bigger scandal, the likelihood that the Huntsman campaign created the ad as a ‘false flag’ attack on the Paul campaign, has been almost universally ignored by the corporate press.
