Saint’s Ancient Heart Stolen from Dublin CathedralComments Off

Somewhere in Ireland, a burglar has the heart of a saint.

Officials at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin said Sunday they’re distraught and perplexed over the theft of the church’s most precious relic: the preserved heart of St. Laurence O’Toole, patron saint of Dublin.

O’Toole’s heart had been displayed in the cathedral since the 13th century. It was stored in a heart-shaped wooden box and secured in a small, square iron cage on the wall of a chapel dedicated to his memory. On Saturday someone cut through two bars, pried the cage loose, and made off with the relic.

“I am devastated that one of the treasured artifacts of the cathedral is stolen,” said the Most Rev. Dermot Dunne, the cathedral’s dean. “It has no economic value but it is a priceless treasure that links our present foundation with its founding father.”

Ireland’s national police force, the Garda Siochana, said detectives were studying hours of closed-circuit TV footage to try to identify the approximately 40 people who walked out the cathedral’s front doors Saturday morning.

The force said the thief may have hidden overnight in the cathedral and fled with the heart when its doors opened Saturday. Worshippers didn’t spot that the relic was missing until Saturday afternoon. Nobody was arrested.

NASA Laptop Stolen with Command Codes That Control Space StationComments Off

NASA’s inspector general revealed in congressional testimony that a space agency computer was stolen last year with the command codes to control the International Space Station.

In a statement given to a House committee on the security challenges facing NASA, Paul K. Martin said that an unencrypted NASA computer stolen last year was one of 48 taken between April 2009 and April 2011.

“The March 2011 theft of an unencrypted NASA notebook computer resulted in the loss of algorithms used to command and control the International Space Station,” Martin said in his written testimony. “Other lost or stolen notebooks contained Social Security numbers and sensitive data on NASA’s Constellation and Orion programs.”

Burglars Steal Porn and Sex Toys, Leave Cash UntouchedComments Off

Pornographic toys, magazines and videos were stolen from a Linda sex shop, but the store’s owner is surprised by what wasn’t taken.

Kevin Couch owns Fantasy Factory across the street from a strip club, and Monday night someone broke into his adult store. But the culprits never touched the cash register.

“They just took the toys and left,” he said. “They didn’t take the money or anything so I was lost. The sheriff’s department was lost. When he saw all the stuff in here and he goes ‘that’s all they took?’ and I was like ‘yeah.’”

So Kevin thinks it was kids just trying to make a little mischief in forbidden territory.

“They see the adult store here, they can’t come in here they can’t purchase this stuff so they are bored and they break in and come in and take it at night when no one is here,” he said.

So far, there are no suspects, just a suspected age range: boys probably about 13 to 17 years old.

“If I was to do it I’d probably go for cash, not adult toys,” Linda resident Rodney Foster said. “I don’t really understand why somebody would take that, that’s kind of gross and weird.”

The thieves busted in by using a chunk of asphalt to crash through the door. It will cost Kevin about $800 to fix the door and he’s out about $150 worth of merchandise.

It’s the second time his store has been broken into in a year.

Copper Sword Stolen from Lincoln’s TombComments Off

*Taken from CBS St. Louis.

Thieves have nabbed a 3-foot-long copper sword atop Lincoln’s Tomb in what is believed to be the first theft at the site in more than a century.

An employee noticed last week that the sword was cut from a statue of a Civil War artillery officer, the (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported Saturday. Officials think the sword was stolen sometime between September and early November.

Nothing had been stolen from the Springfield site, which is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, since the sword on the same statue was taken more than 100 years ago, said Dave Blanchette, a spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. Then, the sword was bronze.

LulzSec Hackers Retire: Time to rethink riskComments Off

*Taken from Information Week.

On Saturday, the hacking group LulzSec, aka the Lulz Boat, announced that it was ceasing operations, ending the group’s 50-day hacking spree. In what the group said was its final act, LulzSec also released a fresh set of stolen documents and files.

But the hackers called for others to carry on. “For the past 50 days we’ve been disrupting and exposing corporations, governments, often the general population itself, and quite possibly everything in between, just because we could,” said the group in a statement uploaded to pastebin. “We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us.”

But why might its members have suddenly decided to bow out? According to security experts, the group may have decided to move on due to increasing pressure from law enforcement agencies. Notably, authorities in Britain last week arrested 19-year-old Ryan Cleary, who had been linked to LulzSec. But the group said via Twitter that Cleary was only “mildly associated” with the group.

“Maybe, quite simply, LulzSec was worried that the heat was intensifying–and it was time for them to get out of the kitchen before the computer crime authorities caught up with them,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, in a blog post.

Sega Hacked: Sony was just the startComments Off

Japanese video game developer Sega Corp said on Sunday that information belonging to 1.3 million customers has been stolen from its database, the latest in a rash of global cyber attacks against video game companies.

Names, birth dates, e-mail addresses and encrypted passwords of users of Sega Pass online network members had been compromised, Sega said in a statement, though payment data such as credit card numbers was safe. Sega Pass had been shut down.

“We are deeply sorry for causing trouble to our customers. We want to work on strengthening security,” said Yoko Nagasawa, a Sega spokeswoman, adding it is unclear when the firm would restart Sega Pass.

Heartless: Disabled Dog’s Wheelchair StolenComments Off

*Taken from CBS Boston. Video at link.

A heartless crime has left a disabled dog without his wheelchair.

Dave Feeney told WBZ-TV someone stole the device that helps his 12-year-old Belgian Shepherd “Lucky” get around.

The dog was hit by a car a few years ago and lost the use of his hind legs.

After Lucky had some outside play time out of the chair Sunday morning, Feeney realized it was missing and quickly called police.

“It’s really obvious what it is and that it was in front of the house. Today’s not trash day. Today’s not recycling day,” he said.

“For somebody to do this, they knew what they were doing.”

Police say they’re looking into it.

Is Criminal Behavior a Prerequisite to Get a Job With the TSA?Comments Off

*Taken from Prison Planet. Written by Paul Joseph Watson.

Why doesn’t Janet Napolitano’s TSA just start using prison inmates to conduct grope downs and naked porno scans of people traveling through US airports? It would save a lot of time and money, and it wouldn’t be a departure from the fact that TSA workers have worked hard to maintain their reputation as thieves, perverts and criminals.

Yet another TSA agent has been caught engaging in criminal behavior. The regularity with which this occurs makes it look like committing felonies is a prerequisite to get a job in airport security.

“A Transportation Security Administration officer at LAX has been arrested for stealing from a traveler’s suitcase,” reports KABC.

“Ryan Driscoll, 31, was arrested on May 10 at Terminal 6. He faces a felony theft charge.”

PlayStation Network Restoration In ‘Final Stages’ of Testing; Sony Details Free Identity Theft Protection PlanComments Off

*Taken from Kotaku. Written by Michael McWhertor.

Expected to return sometime this week, Sony’s PlayStation Network is still offline. But a spokesman for the PlayStation maker says the team responsible for reviving online play and other network services to the PlayStation 3 and PSP has reached “an important step towards restoring” online functionality.

“Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system,” writes Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Patrick Seybold on the company’s blog. He calls it ” an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services.”

“As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data,” Seybold writes. “It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.”

There’s no new target for the restoration of PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, which have been offline since April 20 after an “external intrusion” into Sony’s network forced the company to yank public access. The company announced on Sunday that it would restore “some” PlayStation Network and Qriocity by the end of the week.

PlayStation Network Hackers Have Stolen Personal DataComments Off

My Two Cents: At least Netflix works! End Two Cents.

A security breach in the Playstation Network by still unidentified hackers resulted in stolen personal information, Sony confirmed today.

Sony says while personal information was likely stolen they don’t believe credit card numbers were and that they hope to have the Playstation Network service back up within a week.

The news comes more than nine days after the intrusion and six days after Sony shut down both the Playstation Network and Qriocity services in reaction to the breach. Sony says they’ve hired a “recognized security firm” to conduct a complete investigation into what happened and have taken steps to enhance security and strengthen network infrastructure.

“We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network,” Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications for Sony Computer Entertainment of America, wrote on the official Playstation Blog today.

Among the possible information stolen:

  • Name
  • Address (city, state, zip)
  • Country
  • Email address
  • Birthdate
  • PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login and handle/PSN online ID.

“While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken,” writes Seybold, “we cannot rule out the possibility.”

“If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained,” Seybold continues.

Sony is encouraging users to be especially aware of potential phishing scams from people using email, phone calls and mail to try and extract more personal or sensitive information from you. Sony also is strongly recommending that you change you password once you’re able to log back into the Playstation Network.

“To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports,” Seybold wrote

“We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.”
