Mitt Romney’s latest rebranding effort ran into trouble Monday when video surfaced of the Republican nominee disparaging President Barack Obama’s supporters during what a news report in a liberal magazine described as a private, closed-door fundraiser earlier this year.
In the video, Mr. Romney says nearly half the country supports the president in large measure because they believe that they are entitled to government services for which they don’t pay taxes.
“There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what,” Mr. Romney tells a crowd of his financial backers, in a video posted by Mother Jones. “There are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.”
